What Is Real Ear Measurement?

A Real Ear Measurement (REM) is one of the most important steps in ensuring your hearing aids work correctly for you. This test measures how much sound your hearing aid is delivering inside your ear canal—where it truly matters.

How It Works:

  1. A tiny microphone, placed in a very thin tube, is gently inserted into your ear canal.
  2. Your hearing aid is placed in your ear, right where you’d normally wear it.
  3. Soft test sounds (ranging from very quiet to very loud) are played.
  4. The microphone measures exactly how your hearing aid is amplifying these sounds inside your ear.
  5. We use this information to fine-tune your hearing aid so it’s precisely calibrated for your hearing needs.

Because every ear is different in shape and size, Real Ear Measurement makes sure your hearing aids are customized for your unique ears and hearing loss. This step removes guesswork and ensures your devices are providing the right level of amplification.

Why Hearing Aid Fittings Matter

A hearing aid fitting is about more than just comfort—it’s about making sure your hearing aids work the way they’re supposed to.

Benefits of a Proper Fitting:

  • Comfort = Consistent Use: If hearing aids don’t feel right, people are less likely to wear them. A good fit keeps them comfortable and effective every day.
  • Safe, Accurate Sound Levels: Hearing aids that are too loud can cause discomfort or even harm your hearing. Ones that are too quiet won’t help you hear better. Proper calibration prevents both.
  • Maximizing Advanced Features: Modern hearing aids can connect to your phone, TV, or other devices. During your fitting, we’ll set these features up and teach you how to use them.
  • Customized to You: Every ear and every hearing loss is different. A fitting makes sure your hearing aids are tailored to your exact needs.
